Tennis Week: RIP March 2009

A bad week for sports.

The Reaper, who can certainly be a couch potato between visits, decided that if golf was going to go, tennis should take a hit too.

IMG shut down Tennis Week magazine "to focus on its online web site."

That "new" Tennis Week cover sure does look like something out of GQ or Maxim. Perhaps they would have survived by changing the magazine's title to "Tennis Babe" and focusing just on Ana Ivanovic and her fellow eastern European pin-up players.

Travel + Leisure Golf: RIP March 2009

The Reaper is playing through on American Express Publishing's course today. Unfortunately, there's nobody else here... they've been laid off!

Less frequent jaunts to Myrtle Beach weekends or in the case of plush Travel + Leisure, Scotland and the likes are what killed this one.

We are in the age of austerity, so it's back to miniature golf and bowling.

Haymarket cut the engine on this one "with immediate effect."

If you're surfing, into beautiful pictures of the pipeline, catching a wave and sitting on top of the world, the Reaper snaked in and sent you over the falls.

Blame it on the web. After all, they don't call them "surfers" for nothing!

As you can see, I've had my days hanging ten at the beach.

 

RIP, November 2008: Play, the New York Times Sports Magazine

With the New York Times in a neck and neck race with GM to find out who goes bankrupt first, there's some serious fat to chopped.

The quarterly Play magazine, which was nominated for a National Magazine Award, has been defeated.

Award nominations, even award winners, are no match for the Grim Reaper.

The Alpinist: RIP October 2008

First Future Snowboarding made a face plant just before the summer started. Now the seven-year-old climbing magazine The Alpinist cratered to that big crevasse in the sky after 26 issues.

Instead of beautiful extreme sport photography, we'll all have to be forced onto Facebook and Flickr towatch cousin Bobby's first skiing lessons.
