Let us not forget the small magazines who have met the Reaper just a little too soon. Although you will not read about them in Advertising Age, Mediaweek, or Gawker, they have many loved ones too.
One such title is Realms of Fantasy, which just closed after publishing for 15 years and 100 issues.
Each enthralling issue of Realms of Fantasy hands you the key that unlocks the door to unexplored worlds, timeless travel, heart-pounding quests, unknown peril, ingenious mystery, myth, and magic.
Lots of great reading between the covers from fantasy fiction greats like Tanith Lee, Richard Parks, Robert Silverberg, Jane Yolen, Alan Dean Foster, Harlan Ellison, Gene Wolfe and more. You're bound to discover a new favorite!
That's a drag, I've read this.

I'm really disheartened about Realms of Fantasy closing. I've been reading it since I was in high school, and I've published five short stories there as well. I blogged about this bad news here:

Well, folks- there's always Marvel Comics. Now that the Skrull Invasion is over, crazy Norman Osborn and his goons have taken over security. Will be fun to see him morph back into the Green Goblin and watch Doctor Doom toss a pumpkin bomb back into his scnozz. Meanwhile, according to Bloomberg, Stan Lee Media has sued Marvel and...... Stan Lee. Looks like the Reaper is needed to sort out that mess. Or maybe Doc Doom himself. DC's killed off Bruce Wayne, aka Batman. Looks like it's not really sure where to take the plotline.

I did a bunch of illustrative work for ROF in the 90s and Carl Gnam and the rest of the staff were always one of my favorite clients.
They genuinely believed in providing a venue for short fantasy fiction and great artwork. They put their money where their mouths were, a habit that few publishers practice.
To the best of my knowledge, the demise of ROF means there is not a single print venue left in North American for both spots & full page, B&W and 4C, fantasy artwork … the end of a tradition stretching back to the pulps!
grumble, grumble, mutter, mutter
