Talk about a formula for certain death.
The publicly-traded Advanced Marketing Services, Inc. -- the book distributor for Sam's Club and Costco and other retailers -- launches a bi-monthly magazine called "Pages" in late 2000 for "people who love books."
In 2003, accounting scandals forced the ouster of several executives. Topping it off, one former VP was sentenced to three years in jail for fraud.
Clearly unfazed by the opening and closing of "Book" magazine in less than two years (and a Museum of Dead Magazines favorite), they just plow ahead...
Until they declare bankruptcy in December 2006, and close Pages earlier this month.
How many strikes against them did you see coming in this story?
Did anybody tell these guys that "people who love reading books" don't read enough magazines to support them?
This really sucks, because I wrote an article for them, a really easy interview of this author, and they paid me really well. Rest In Peace? Forget that, keep printing this puppy so I could still work every few years!!! www.timbermedia.com
